Rotational Program (ETA Track)
Five years ago I was looking for this exact job as an entrepreneur and couldn't find it. So I'm creating it.
- Role
- A rotational program to experience how various small businesses run, along with learning the business buying process
- Pay
- $100,000 base, plus a bonus structure based on performance and deals
- Location
- Remote, with travel required, primarily to New York, Austin, and Iowa
The role
What this is
Taking the leap into buying a small business can be tough and scary. It often feels like the wild west. I am looking for a driven individual who wants to get into entrepreneurship through acquisition (ETA).
We have built a successful holdco that owns and operates multiple businesses, and we want to pass that knowledge along and grow talent internally over a one-year contract. This rotational program will teach you how a small business operates, markets, grows, dies, and everything in between. We teach you how to break down any business into people and process by showing you.
You would do the work and be on site for a period of time at each business, which lets you form your own ideas on how to run it better, plan, execute, and iterate. We do not plan and then hand off to another team. The entire lifecycle is owned by you.
We will also walk you through the entire playbook of buying a business, from sourcing to diligence to deal structuring. By the end of the year you will be fully versed in the world of small business acquisition.
What you will do
Responsibilities
- Do the actual work: travel to our small businesses, interact with customers, learn from employees, identify inefficiencies, and improve them
- Speak with business brokers
- Run due diligence
- Build systems: financial tracking, operational efficiency, and whatever else the business needs
What we are looking for
Required, and nice to have
Required
- Hard worker
- Entrepreneurial spirit
- Charismatic and kind. Customers and employees do not want to work with a jerk.
- Willingness to learn
- AI proficiency. The world is changing, and you are willing to learn and apply new tools.
- Eagerness for this career path
Nice to have
- Experience working in a small business
- Experience running diligence for buying businesses or investments
- AI savant
The ideal candidate
Driven, a self starter, with real business acumen, and kind. That last one goes much further than you would think. Someone willing to get their hands dirty and do the work, not just make PowerPoints and build Excel sheets to add shareholder value.
This is not Goldman or McKinsey or a hot, sexy AI startup. We focus on small, real, profit driven, long tenured business, which is hot and sexy to me.
After the year
Two primary paths if you want to stay
01
Fractional CEO across the holdco
Oversee our operating companies at the holding company level.
02
Your own acquisition
We sponsor you and help you find your own business to acquire and operate.
The opportunity I wanted five years ago was a chance to be an entrepreneur while derisking that jump, with genuine education and a base salary to keep a roof over your head. That is what this is. You do not have to go about it on your own.
About us
West Boulder Capital
We buy small businesses from owners who are ready to retire, and then hold onto them. There is no fund behind us, no clock, and nobody we are planning to sell to. When we buy one the name over the door stays the same and so does the crew, and the customers generally never find out anything changed.
Every business breaks down to people and processes. We are not masters of any one service or industry, but we are highly capable problem solvers at building the best processes and matching the perfect individuals.
How to apply
A resume and a cover video
No cover letter (I don't want your AI slop). Send your resume, and in place of the letter, record a short video telling me why you want this and why you are a good fit. Your phone camera is fine, no editing and no script read aloud. I care about the video far more than the resume. Put the video somewhere with a link, then use the form or email directly.
Know someone instead?
Refer them, and we will pay you $1,000 if we hire them. Have them name you in the application.
